I have to agree with Paul that the Lib Dems seem to be very tribal about this scheme. This must be the legacy they want to leave for the people of Tolworth. As this scrutiny meeting wasn't advertised on the Tolworth Greenway website (I feel this was done deliberately so that there would be less opposition on the night) I wasn't able to attend the meeting but if it was anything like the meeting on 15 December the decision to support the scheme was made by the lib dem Cllrs before the meeting. There is light at the end of the tunnel though. It is in the shape of getting all these useless Cllrs out at the next election. Once the people of Tolworth are caught up in traffic that never moves, I for one will remember the names of the self righteous Cllrs who couldn't be bothered about the views of the people who have to live with the roundabout every day. I have never come across a bigger bunch of useless "managers". No wonder Kingston council is in such trouble! My final comment is about funding. Where is the money coming from. My guess is that it is being funded by Tesco's. I raised this at the 15 December meeting and the Lib Dem Cllrs looked sharply at each other and then denied it (it was like catching a child with its hand in the sweetie jar). Why do you think that they are trying move this scheme forward as fast as possible. I can't wait for the next election!

I couldn't agree more Harri. When I represented Surbiton Hill I thought we had just about killed this project at a joint meeting with South of the Borough Neighbourhood Committee late in 2009. I was amazed to see it resurrected. Cllrs. Richard Hudson and Mike Burden of Alexandra Ward (both Con) have tried to get the Council to think again (I say 'again' with tongue in cheek!) by petitions and the Scrutiny Panel. But the Lib Dem majority is determined to take a tribal, partisan stance on the matter and force it through. This is so even though it doesn't begin to address the real problems of Tolworth Broadway, which are really caused by the disappearance of some of the shops that used to be there such as Towlers for lighting and Gilbert the jewellers, both of which I used to use and which I miss very much.
Why? I can suggest three reasons:-
1. The idea was criticised by Cllrs from 2009 onward who happen to be Tories and are therefore wrong.
2. On the face of it it looks like a 'green' measure and on the side of feet as opposed to wheels.
3. Lib Dems love things like humps, cushions and things that you can take pictures of to create an illusion of fruitful activity in Focus leaflets.

I have just read this proposal in full and had to ring my mum at work so we could have a good laugh about it.

I have grown up in this area for the last 35 years and the barriers are there for a reason - it is a dangerous road at the best of times but particularly in the evening and early morning when there is little or no traffic and people speed off the junction. Putting green resin and some trees in the middle of this road will not change this. Also, making it 20 miles an hour up to the A3 is just going to cause more congestion than we already have in that area during busy periods, just to make it look "pretty" - why? In case any tourists actually come here during the Olympics??!

I agree that Tolworth Broadway could do with some rejuvenation, but I don't think spending £2.6 million on the plans above is the answer. I'm not sure why the Lib Dems view this plan as "value for money" either. Where is the value?

Will it work, 20mph on a road already at stand still during the rush hours or when there is an accident on the A3. I am not convinced re safety issues. However now that the council are paying 1million plus TFL payments, Tesco on the A3 corner will not have to pay much for changing the road system. Their new plans will be out soon now that they have been told that they do not need to complete a EIA. I cannot understand that decison seeing as the A3 and the Ewell Rd have high levels of pollution and a high incident of people with COPD!no doubt. I am not looking forward to living on the Ewell Road during the next year due to development on :
Tolworth Greenway
Tesco
Red Lion & Ellerton Road developments
The hospital site
I just wish someone somewhere would look at the whole system and what is will do to this area

The whole of the Surbiton Hospital developement has been ill conceived from day one. But I can assure you that the most affected will be us at 90/92 Ewell Road, most especially after tonight's decision to relocate the bus stop outside our business and home.

Such assurances that local business would not be affected, were PURE BALONEY.

Our land should have been made a compulsory purchase order to facilitate the road transport plans proposed and ease congestion around the site.

So we all know the truth, patients have to walk much further from the bus stop at Kingston Hospital , but heh ho , I really look forward to severe pavement congestion and bus users with their feet propped against our walls and using our canopies as a bus shelter.

I will be out there with buckets of watery bleach and a very large broom.

Once again a really huge Bravo to the Surbiton Hill Lib Dems ... you were seen to be doing the right thing by pleasing the majority. But your promises about the relocation of the bus stop SK are like overcooked PIE CRUST !!!!

PLEASE DO ME A FAVOUR AND DO NOT COME NEAR OUR PROPERTY AGAIN, YOU ARE AS WELCOME AS THE PLAGUE

It is going to all the time be stimulating to learn content material from different writers and practice a little something from their store. I’d desire to use some with the content material on my weblog whether or not you don’t mind. Natually I’ll offer you a link on your web blog. Thanks for sharing.

Well said Rob. I live on the Ewell Road so apart from the hospital site we also have to contend with the future Tesco development at the former Government buildings Toby Jug (on again now) the CNM Red Lion development (well it might start this year) the CNM Ellerton Road car pound development (it might start this year) and finally the Police Station development (given planning permission to people who are yet to purchase the site) as they are ALL on the Ewell Road. Just wait for the lorries and then the utility companies digging up the pavements and roads to add electricity, gas, water and then the cable companies and BT to connect all those extra users. Gridlock, I think I mentioned at previous planning meetings. However as each development is looked at on it's owm merits it is about time someone in Planning or Transport for London looked at "collective development impact on main roads" just like Kingston has done for alcohol. At least the petitions helped there.

As I said on Facebook but I thought it was worth commenting here too:

Sweet Lord!!! This is outrageous! The only reason they managed to get that development through was by blatantly lying about the impact to the local community. Any fool can predict that it will cause carnage every morning to both Ewell Road and Oakhill! I am stunned, truly stunned.

I tried to drive along Ewell Road this morning at 8am, it took me five minutes to get out of Princes Avenue, the traffic was appalling. Once the school is open there will be no open route from the A3 to Kingston, the knock on effects will be very serious.

Moving the bus stop is another quick in the teeth of the sick and elderly - the only groups who won't be driving to the site and will now have to walk further to the Doctor's! Remind me again, the Lib Dem's claimed to care for the elderly during the byelection didn't they?
